Bose SoundLink Color II: Portable Bluetooth, Wireless Speaker

I applauded Bose’s first SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker for being reasonably priced (by Bose standards) and sounding well for its small size. This is the SoundLink Color II, which is identical in shape but slightly shorter and squatter, weighs somewhat more (1.28 pounds or 581g vs. 1.20 pounds or 544g), and costs the same: $130, £120 in the UK, and AU$179 in Australia.

When compared to the original, this new model is totally covered with soft-to-the-touch rubber, which has a little give and seems better intended to handle drops. The new speaker is also IPX-4 certified, making it splashproof but not waterproof. Or, to put it another way, it should be able to survive in the rain.

It also has a speakerphone microphone and NFC tap-to-pair technology for devices that support it. The SoundLink Color II can remember up to eight devices and has the same eight-hour battery life (at medium volume). (That’s OK but not remarkable.)

I don’t think the design is better, but it does look more adult and modest. To my dismay, it attracts dust, lint, and carpet fibers, so you’ll need to clean it down from time to time (it is water-resistant, so a damp cloth will not harm it).

No AC adaptor is included with the USB-powered speaker. That may annoy some, but it didn’t bother me — any ordinary phone or gadget charger will do.

It was easy to pair and re-pair the speaker with an iPhone 6S and a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge using voice prompts. The Bose Connect app for iOS and Android allows you to rename the speaker, disable speech prompts, and check your remaining battery life.

For its size, the SoundLink Color is undoubtedly one of the best-sounding Bluetooth speakers. I put a bunch of music through it and was impressed with the sound it produced, however it has limitations. (It can fill a small room with sound but not a bigger one.)
