The OfficeJet 6978’s 35-sheet ADF is bigger than the MFC-20 J985DW’s sheets but smaller than the MB2720’s 50 sheets. However, only the OfficeJet model supports unassisted two-sided scanning, which is useful in many small-office settings. The OfficeJet 6978’s maximum monthly duty cycle is 20,000 pages, with a recommended monthly volume of 200 to 800 pages, compared to 20,000 pages for the MB2720 and 1,250 pages for the MFC-J985DW.

The OfficeJet 6978 supports Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB connection to a single PC, and Wireless Direct, HP’s equivalent to Wi-Fi Direct for connecting mobile devices without a network or router. Also available via mobile devices are HP’s own ePrint, and AirPrint. A searchable PDF can be saved as a BMP, JPEG or PNG. A port on the left front of the chassis allows scanning and printing from USB thumb drives. With HP’s Jet Advantage Private Print (also known as “Secure Print” on some laser printers), you can secure sensitive print jobs with a PIN. Many of these options, as well as walkup tasks like copying or printing from a USB drive, are configured via a 2.7-inch color touch screen surrounded by four buttons: Home, Back, Cancel, and Help.
