Since Oculus founder (and controversial VR poster boy) Palmer Luckey initially exposed the world to the Oculus Rift in 2012, virtual reality has come a long way.

The Oculus Rift S, now acquired by Facebook, should be the next step forward for the company's high-end, PC-based virtual reality experiences. However, in terms of advancements and new features over the original Oculus Rift, this is more of a baby step. What we're saying is that the Oculus Rift S isn't a direct successor to the Oculus Rift 2. But it's a strong contender when it comes to the top VR headsets on the market in 2021.

If you keep up with technology, you've probably heard about the Oculus Rift S. That's because both Apple and Microsoft utilize the letter 'S' to denote an incremental upgrade (see the Xbox One S and iPhone XS for examples), as well as to indicate that the product is backwards compatible and will eventually replace the original. All of these characteristics apply to the Oculus Rift S.

As a result, we now have a virtual reality headset that outperforms its predecessor, the original Oculus Rift, in many ways, particularly in terms of accessibility. This VR gear, however, isn't the generational leap forward that many had hoped for. The Rift S, in fact, makes some trade-offs that feel like a step backwards. In conclusion, the Rift S is a nice game – but not 'next-gen' good.

Oculus rift S PC-powered VR gaming headset, like the Oculus Rift VR headset that preceded it. (Also referred to as the ‘original’ Oculus Rift), relies on a computer to deliver virtual reality experiences.

It connects to your PC through USB 3.0 and DisplayPort, and is attached to the machine by a long wire. That’s more than enough to support the Rift S’s ‘room-scale’ experiences. It’s less free-moving than the excellent wireless Oculus Quest and the more current Oculus Quest 2. (Both of which are standalone headsets with no cables). But the trade-off is that it can place you inside more powerful. And ambitious VR environments because it’s powered by your PC.

The Rift S, like other VR headsets, positions two goggle-like lenses in front of your eyes. Providing a stereoscopic 3D perspective of the environment you’re in. Your real-world movements are then translated into in-game movements using a mix of sensors. For instance, if you shift your head left, the digital environment moves with you. If you crouch, the in-game floor gets closer to you in real time. It’s still a fantastic, almost sci-fi-like experience. Especially if the interactive world around you is engaging.

However, once you get beyond the overall “wear it on your head” similarities, the Rift S’s industrial design. It is vastly different from the original Oculus Rift. Sure, that won’t bother anyone new to VR. But it’s worth noting if you already own an Oculus Rift and are thinking about upgrading.

It’s comfortable enough, though, like many VR headsets. It doesn’t completely mask the fact that you’re wearing a weight on your head. The Rift S is no exception, and its frontal weight distribution. It also makes it feel heavier than the original Rift.

The Features

Top VR gaming library: Blast, slash, and soar through the best VR gaming library. The Oculus Rift S allows you to play hundreds of games and exclusives. That are already available in the Oculus store, with more more on the way

Improved optics: Use next-generation lenses and a clearer display to take down the competition. Improved optics produce brighter, more vibrant colors with less of a “screen-door” effect.

Keep your head in the game with a Halo headband that has been developed with speed in mind. With a short twist of the fit wheel, Rift S stays securely and comfortably in place. Allowing it to take-or double-take-your fastest reactions.

Oculus touch controllers: Upgrade your Oculus touch controllers today. In VR, your slashes, throws, and grabs appear with intuitive, realistic precision. Bringing your hands and motions into the game.

Tracking with Oculus insight: take a step further using Oculus insight. It converts your movements into virtual reality regardless of which direction you’re facing. And delivers room-scale tracking without the use of external sensors.

Logging onto the Oculus Rift S requires a Facebook account. Making it simple to meet up with friends in virtual reality. And explore new communities around the world.
