First Alert Onelink Safe & Sound – Smart Hardwired Smoke
The Onelink Safe & Sound may also be used as a conventional Bluetooth speaker, providing you with even more versatility, especially if you haven’t jumped on the Alexa bandwagon yet. Furthermore, according to First Alert, functionality for Apple’s AirPlay 2 will be added later this year. In the event that you’ve constructed your smart home around Google Assistant, First Alert plans to introduce a different model later this year that is based on Google’s technologies.
While it is always difficult to test for responsiveness to smoke and carbon monoxide with precision, I found that the Onelink Safe & Sound was noticeably slower to respond to the presence of smoke, and it needed more of it to set off the alarm in my tests.
Once it does respond, the alarm is deafeningly loud (it has an 85dB siren), and in my testing, it successfully delivered push notifications to my phone practically immediately after being activated. What exactly is the problem? By default, the notification appeared for a brief moment before disappearing. If you use the Onelink app, which you should if you want to get the most out of this product, be sure to set notifications to “permanent” rather than “temporary” so that you don’t miss the fact that your house is on fire.
When it comes to functionality, the app is fairly rudimentary, allowing you to make only a few changes to the unit’s settings, such as enabling/disabling the Bluetooth connection, turning off the Alexa microphone, and changing the color of the lighted ring located in the center of the unit’s face. This ring is color-tunable, but it does not have the ability to cycle through its color palette, and while it cannot be programmed to turn on exclusively at night (like the Nest Protect’s nightlight can), it can be programmed to automatically alter its brightness throughout the day.
