Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat for Smart Home, DIY, With Alexa

It’s rather simple to install the ST55; however, if you’re not experienced working with low-voltage cables, you may want to enlist the assistance of someone who is familiar with the process or employ a professional. You have the option of following the on-screen installation steps in the app, or you may skip them if you have previously installed the device on your computer or tablet. To begin, I shut off the electricity to my current thermostat at the circuit breaker box and proceeded to uninstall it, but not before snapping a photo of the wiring that was already in place. After removing the old thermostat, I connected my wires to the ST55 mounting plate terminals and then secured the mounting plate to the wall. I then replaced the thermostat. I simply snapped the thermostat onto the mounting plate, and it began to operate immediately. I then launched the app, selected the Sensi Smart thermostat by tapping on the + icon in the upper left corner of the home screen, and then pressed on the Save button.

I bypassed the installation instructions and instead followed the on-screen instructions to start the Wi-Fi radio by hitting the Menu button on the device, followed by the Mode button, and then pressing the Power button. I double-checked that the thermostat screen was showing the number 22, then hit the Schedule button on the remote control. I checked to see that the screen had changed to 00 and then used the Wi-Fi settings on my phone to connect to the thermostat. I input the eight-digit security code (which could be found on the provided security card) and gave the device a name, and the installation process was complete in minutes.

During testing, the ST55 performed admirably. Heating levels were raised and decreased rapidly in response to app and local commands. It also adhered to my heating programs without fail. Using Alexa and Siri voice commands to modify temperature set points and communicate the current temperature worked as planned, and the geofencing capability worked as intended as well. The dedicated Schedule button on the thermostat, as well as the user-friendly mobile app, made it simple to program the thermostat.

The Emerson Sensi ST55 lacks the clean aesthetic of its $169 Sensi Touch Smart Thermostat ST75 brother. And the sleek, puck-shaped Nest Thermostat. It has a matte white finish and measures 3.7 by 5.8 by 1.0 inches (HWD).

The mode, fan, and schedule buttons are underneath the 1.7-by-2.7-inch (HW) monochrome LCD. Up and down arrows and a Menu button are to the right, and a light button illuminates the LCD. Choose a temperature mode (Celsius or Fahrenheit) and modify fan speed. And humidification set points using the Menu and arrow buttons.

A C (common) wire is required for usage with most single- and two-stage HVAC systems. HVAC systems that use heat pumps or central air conditioning can use it as well. With electric baseboard heating, it fails.

Wire labels, an installation guide, and a welcome guide are all included in the box. In the case of a power outage, the mounting base supports two AA batteries (included).
