Bose Portable Smart Speaker — Wireless Bluetooth Speaker with Alexa Voice Control Built-In

The cylindrical Portable Home Speaker is available in black or silver and weighs 2.4 pounds. The top of the speaker has a thick cloth-bound handle for portability, and a rubberized base stabilizes the body. A mono driver delivers sound in all directions behind a wraparound grille. The top panel has grille perforations that shield the mic array and surround the controls.

Touch-sensitive power, mic mute, and Bluetooth controls (for switching between Bluetooth and Wi-Fi sources, and pairing). You can speak to Alexa or Google Assistant by pressing the voice assistant button or using wake words. Tap play/pause twice to skip forward a track, and three taps to go backward. A small status LED is adjacent to the power button, and a ring of LEDs flashes different colors for different functions like powering up or listening. No built-in speakerphone.

The IPX4 certification of the Portable Home Speaker is low. Light splashes will not harm the speaker. So it’s probably not the best poolside speaker, and you shouldn’t put it under any water pressure. There are lots of competitors with better IPX ratings, but few are smart speakers.

The Bose Music app is required to set up the speaker; all you need is your Wi-Fi password. Once connected, you may update the speaker’s firmware and change settings like who can access it. Using Alexa or Google Assistant is also made simple. The mics take up voice instructions well—we spoke quietly while music blared, and Alexa mostly heard us

The app features many streamable radio stations and basic controls, such as controlling several Bose smart speakers in different rooms on the same network. Aside from Amazon and Google Music, you can stream audio via AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, or Bluetooth. User-adjustable EQ is included.

Bose rates the Portable Home Speaker’s battery life at 12 hours, although your mileage may vary. The speaker comes with a USB-C charging cord and a charging cradle costs an extra $29.
