There isn’t much to the SmartTag in terms of functionality. It’s shaped like a squircle and measures roughly 38mm square with rounded edges. It’s roughly 8mm thick at its thickest point, yet it’s rounded at the edges, so it’s similar to the texture of a smooth pebble in appearance.

Apart from the necessary IPX3 water resistance, there isn’t much to say about this device, which is available in two colors. We mistakenly left the SmartTag out in the snow over the weekend (on purpose, of course), and it was still functional the next morning, which is exactly what you’d hope for from a device like this.

There’s a hole in one of the corners, so you can use it to attach it to other objects. If you put it on your keyring, put it in your backpack, or connect it to other valuables, the idea is that you won’t have to think about it again.

There is a touch area on one side of the SmartTag, which is used to access the device’s functionalities and is not a physical button, which makes it unique. Instead, the device’s center, where the Galaxy SmartTag logo is located, depresses with a pleasing click as the button is depressed.

In addition to responding to button presses, there is a small on-board beeper that also serves as an alarm, allowing you to “ring” the tag when you’re attempting to locate it.

You can open the SmartTag with your fingers, and inside you’ll find a CR2032 battery that’s good for 280 days of continuous operation, which means it’s easy to replace, just like the battery in a gadget like the Tile Pro.
